AUDIENCE
This course is aimed at practising teachers who are interested
in developing the skills necessary to effectively use the
Internet as a resource with their students, either in face-to-face
teaching contexts, online teaching contexts, or both.

TIMETABLE
Our course will cover 4 weeks from 09 January 2009. Participants
are expected to spend
approx. 6-8 hours per week on online individual and collaborative group work,
including offline reading and reflection. Deadlines for task completion are
weekly, and participants can log on at any point during the week to work on
the course. There are no 'fixed' times to be online - apart from regular
timetabled online chats - these are negotiated to suit everyone. You will receive
a detailed study timetable to help you organise your workload effectively once
you have enrolled on the course.
SKILLS
You wont need any prior knowledge of web design issues,
although you will need some experience of email, and basic
web browsing skills.
CONTENT
Our course looks at a variety of types of Internet-based
collaborative tasks which are applicable in EFL/ESL situations.
The focus will be on webquests (see below).
OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, you will:
produce a project based on a webquest (click to see examples from previous courses)
develop your basic IT (information technology) skills
become familiar with using the Internet as a resource for learners
develop the skills necessary to effectively handle students online work
explore the principles of project work and collaborative learning, and experience how this can be effectively promoted online
COURSE STRUCTURE
You will follow the course entirely online, working individually,
in small study groups of 6 to 8 and with a tutor. You will:
evaluate and analyse Internet-based materials
develop your own skills in online
communication and negotiation through collaborative
group work
reflect on the skills needed for
working effectively with students online. This includes
moderating skills, climate setting, support, etc.
create
a final project tailored
to the needs of your own learners, which you will
be able to use with your EFL classes.
CERTIFICATION
The Consultants-E will issue you with a Certificate on
successful completion of the course. Successful completion
of the course is defined as completing 80% of the course
work, and especially the final course project, where applicable.
WHAT YOU NEED
You will need a PC or Mac with an Internet connection, a
web browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape) and an email
program.
