Sheila Hutton– The Perfect Place to Live Competition
IThis WebQuest was written for a group of mixed nationality students in the 18 – 23 age group just starting out on a English foundation/pre-university course at a tertiary college.  It should help students get to know each other, get experience of working in groups, of giving presentations and of using technology.  Students write a quiz about their home town or favourite place, decide on the judging criteria for ‘The Perfect Place to Live Competition’, prepare and give presentations on the shortlisted places and then vote for the winner.  This could be a semester long project, but it should also be possible to simply use the first 3 activities from the webquest on a short course.  Extension and further development ideas are suggested in the Teacher's Guide.  If you use this webquest feedback and further suggestions are very welcome, please contact hutton.sc@gmail.com

Seiyifa Koroye– Madiba
This WebQuest introduces learners to the life and times of Nelson Mandela (known as Madiba). Aimed at intermediate students, the WQ explores Mandela’s life and achievements, and learners presten their findings via poster presentations. Finally, learners need to produce a proposal for the AU, urging it to honour Mandela by declaring his birthday a “Pride of Africa Day” to be celebrated by all African countries.

Charles Davis and Dan Jones– Further Education College Evaluation
This WebQuest was designed as part of an ESP course to meet the needs of a delegation of Libyan students, who are in the Midlands area of the UK to study a postgraduate certificate in further education college management.  The WebQuest was used as an orientation task to familiarise the students with the colleges they would be attending as part of the course.  The students took on the roles of Libyan education experts sent to the area on a fact finding mission.  They were required to evaluate several courses in each college in order to find the best courses to which a delegation of 100 Libyan students could be sent in September 2008.

In this WebQuest, aimed at Intermediate level learners, students have to produce a magazine article on the Orient Express train. They will have to gather information about the history of the train as well as the mysteries and intrigues surrounding it.

In this WebQuest for Intermediate or above, students plan a guidebook for new students arriving in Edinburgh. Part 1 is the main WebQuest, and Part 2 contains websites for learners to visit, and the Teacher’s Notes.

Helen Cocking - Ethical Foods
In this WebQuest students are healthcare assistants, promoting a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. They conduct a fact-finding survey on healthy and environmentally-friendly food, make a television advertisement for a food store, and write a discursive essay on the advantages and disadvantages of different types of food store.

Khayal Guliyev - Kinds of discrimination: Gender
This WebQuest explores issues of gender equality in the learners' country, and surveys learners' opinions on the topic. Learners write a newspaper article and present a report to the class.

Lisa Haug - Adventure sports
In this WebQuest, students are leaders of a youth club who need to do a survey of how dangerous young people think adventure sports are, and to present one of the sports at the next youth club meeting. Although especially designed for apprentice IT students at Intermediate level, this WebQuest is suitable for teenagers and adults of general English too.

Mary Foley - D-Day | Additional Notes
Students visit websites in order to find out what certain words or terms mean in relation to the World War II D-Day landings of June 1944. With this information they make a crossword around the theme of the D-Day landings. Aimed at adolescent learners, but also suitable for adults, by Mary Foley.

This webquest, based on current pop music, should be of interest to teenage students. The students compare the current Top 10 in their own country, in the UK and in the USA. It is comparatively short and simple, and can be adapted to suit the classroom conditions.

Carl Dowse - Digital Brand Management
This Web Quest is primarily designed for students of business English and aims to develop their skills in website evaluation and expand their knowledge of key marketing terms. Students visit the websites for well-known brands and assess how well the companies use their online presence to enhance brand knowledge. After comparing the results of their research with evaluations of the same websites from marketing experts, they present their findings.

Valentina Dodge - e-Business (e-Biz)
This WebQuest explores the world of online commerce. Students are involved in comparing and contrasting e-carts (characteristics and secure payment methods) and they will discover the potential or pitfalls of e-commerce for exporting local products/services.  They will try to determine whether they need to sell  "their" local businesses online or not, and they will present their findings at a simulated business meeting. Sheila Vine - Just the job
This WebQuest has been written for apprentices in commercial studies at a Germany media company. However, by changing the links it could be suitable for learners from any country who:
- need to apply for jobs, and to create a C.V. and covering letter in English
- need to know something about the English speaking job market and the differences between it and their national job market.
The WebQuest is suitable for older teenagers and adults for whom the English-speaking job market is relevant. Level of English B2.

Ruth Taylor and Debbie Candy - Using Authentic Materials
This WebQuest is designed to help trainee teachers consider different types of authentic materials and their advantages and disadvantages. Trainees then select appropriate authentic materials and create sample activities. Trainees also get practice in using PowerPoint and presenting their materials and activities with rationales. They are encouraged to reflect both on their performance and their peers (in the presentation), as well as consider the dynamics of group work.

Fiona McGarry - Writing Skills
This WebQuest is aimed at EFL/ESL teacher trainers and teachers of young learners. It looks at the problems that young learners have with writing in English and encourages the teacher to find interesting activities that develop the writing skill. It also helps teachers find useful resource sites and become more familiar with current methodologies.

This webquest explores in a fun way, the history, methods, approaches and applications of English Language Teaching. Tanja Erzetic & Natasa Soban - Mine clearance
All over the world there are millions of mines hidden in the ground, a souvenir from a previous war or conflict. Currently there are mine clearing missions in many parts of the world? In this WebQuest learners research the topic of mine clearance (especially in the Balkans), then write and present a report on mine clearance anywhere in the world.

Lydia  Stoyanova - A Modern Navy's Mission
A modern Navy will need to be prepared to support civil authorities as necessary in response to major disasters, emergencies, terrorist attacks, or other threats. This WebQuest prepares learners to deliver a speech at an international conference on the challenges the modern Navy is facing, through research and discussing problems with 'expert teams'.

This WebQuest is especially suitable for NCOs and Officers, who research and prepare presentations in groups on the following: tanks, helicopters, armoured fighting vehicles, attack aircraft.

A WebQuest for lovers of aviation of all ages, at level of English B2 (Common European Framework). This WebQuest is designed to give students practice in English language and study skills using terminology related to aerobatics. Learners research and w rite procedural descriptions for at least one aerobatic manoeuver. In groups of 2 - 3, learners give a presentation on the topic of Aerobatics.

Lena Naumova & Marina Mshvidobadze - Are you ready to be a Peacekeeper?
Find out about peacekeeping operations all over the world in this WebQuest, and write a report about them. Aimed especially at adult learners of English for peacekeeping purposes at intermediate and higher levels, this WebQuest can be used as a supplementary material for Campaign or any other Military English course.

Dragos Cocis - Cooperation, Security and Democracy in a post-Cold War era: A webquest on NATO and OSCE
In this WebQuest, students are part of a team of journalists, working for a famous newspaper in New York City. The US and the European Community are celebrating 15 years since the Cold War ended peacefully, and students write an article about today’s new challenges: terrorism, freedom of expression, intolerance and discrimination. Aleksandra Karalus – Carnival Crime
In this WebQuest students are police officers working for Interpol, and investigate a crime committed during the Carnival in Rio, Brazil. Students examine Interpol’s most wanted criminals list, communicate with other ‘police’, and find a suspect for the crime, presenting their findings to a police commission. Aimed at intermediate and higher levels.

Kiril Hadjiev – Assault Rifles
This WebQuest deals with assault rifles, which are the standard small arms in all modern armies. By doing this Webquest, students learn about several types of assault rifles - their history, their parameters, and capabilities - and then present one assault rifle to the class, trying to convince their classmates that theirs is the best. Aimed at lower intermediate students.

Ekaterine Pakhuridze – The Role of NATO in Crisis Management
This WebQuest explores the role of NATO in crisis management, in areas such as the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq. Students are journalists who need to present their findings on a poster to the class. Aimed at intermediate and higher levels.

Oana Popescu – Human beings torn between rights and responsibilities
The understanding of the effects of human rights in our daily lives and the awareness of the need to balance those rights with the other’s rights require an understanding of what human rights are. In this WebQuest students develop an understanding of what human rights are by working with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and taking part in a mock trial. Aimed at upper intermediate learners of English and higher levels.

Diana Nedelcu – Military Airplanes
This WebQuest is aimed at students working in the Romanian air force, but it is also relevant to other English for Peacekeeping Purposes contexts. Here students present a comparison of two military airplanes to a committee – one used by the Romanian Air force and one used by a foreign force. Students present the advantages and possible drawbacks of each craft, and eventually decide on the purchase of a new type of plane for the Romanian Air force. Aimed at intermediate and higher levels.

Biljana Atanasovska – Natural Disasters: a global issue
One of the many roles of the Army is to help the local population, community, and country, during and after natural disasters. In this WebQuest students are trainers who will teach a group of cadets about different natural disasters as well as the procedures that need to be taken. To do this, students research a particular natural disaster as well as the first aid precautions/ procedures before, during and after the disaster. Their findings are shared via a PowerPoint presentation or a poster presentation. Aimed at intermediate and higher levels.

Ervin Valo – Tsunami
This WebQuest examines a very powerful natural disaster phenomena – tsunami. Students research why tsunamis are so dangerous, death-toll, warning systems and also how and where they happen. Students then produce a 5-day diary of their imagined experiences of a tsunami, and finally take part in an interview / role play. For intermediate learners of English.
